Wounded LuLu

Hello, friends.  I’m afraid we have a wounded LuLu this week, and I’m not sure when she’ll get back to her regular Golden Retriever style running, playing, and swimming.  Rich took them out to the sand dunes on Tuesday – a favorite spot for its wide open areas, many small lakes and ponds to swim, and pine groves to explore – but, unfortunately, it’s also a favorite spot for gun owners’ target practice, and there are a few irresponsible people who use glassware for targets.  One minute LuLu was running all happy and carefree, and the next she was bleeding and limping.  She has a big gash on the pad of her foot and she’ll have to take it easy until it heals.  Just look at that sad face.

LuLuWoundedAug2013

The cut went all the way into the delicate meat of her paw across two toe pads.  We removed the bandage after it stopped bleeding so the air and her own tender ministrations could help with the healing.  Dog slobber is the best salve for a wound.  Just when Rich finally finished painting the house and we thought Wally and LuLu could run their hearts out the rest of the summer . . .   It will be a while before the wound is toughened up enough for that.  I’m keeping a close eye on it and sitting quietly with her whenever possible.

I hope you all have a good weekend, and maybe the next time we meet here I’ll be able to report on happier times.  See you then!

  8. Oh, my goodness! Such a sorrowful little face. I hope it does heal up soon so she can be back to her sweet playful self and can go run and play again. People are so lazy and careless and now thinking about what they are NOT doing can mean to someone else.

  10. This actually brought tears. It kind of surprised me, but I've come to love Wally and Lulu. I know Lulu is getting the best care from her Mom and Dad.

  11. Oh no! Leslie, I'm so, so sorry this has happened. I understand about injuries to the paw; they can take a long time to heal as you said. I do see that sad face : ( Bless her heart, and it's hard to know how it pains her as well. I think some extra sweet TLC is in order for sweet Lulu. Please keep us all up-to-date while she heals. But ... good to know the painting is done - Yay Rich! Okay next post, pictures of the new look. Until then we're (Vance and I) sending gentle hugs and kisses to Lulu. A hug for Wally too. : )

    Hugs,
    Susie ~

  12. Sorry I've not been around for a while. I have occasionally been popping by but haven't been saying much on-line. I'm sad to hear about poor Lulu. It doesn't matter how careful and safety conscious we are, there's always unthinking, irresponsible idiots around to put our kids in danger. It makes me so angry. I hope her paw heals quickly so she can enjoy a bit of running about in what's left of the good weather. Give her & Wally a big hug and kiss for me.

  13. I am so sad for Lulu and you and Rich and Wally! When a member of the family is hurt, everyone hurts. Poor baby.... humans are so stupid sometimes. They just don't think. Glass? Really? Right out of a western movie ... dummies. I am going to pray for Lulu's quick recovery....and my left hand hurts just looking at that cute, sad, adorable face. Hugs!

Poor little girl.. When one of our own hurts, we all hurt. I hope she mends well and quickly. It makes me wonder about the rest of our species. How some of us can be so selfish and thoughtless. I oscillate between sympathy for the little gentle patient and the ugly humans who caused it. Thinking of you all.

  15. I am so sorry Lulu got hurt. We went camping with our son and grandson several years ago and the same thing, someone had been doing target practice with glass jars. Our grandson was only two at the time and prone to tripping and falling. I spent several hours picking up shards of glass to make the area safe for him.

  16. I'm sending LuLu special wishes for a quick recovery! Get well sweet girl so you can run and swim once again with Wally. I know he must miss the romps the two of them shared.
This world is full of self-centered people with mush for brains, they could go to a shooting range to target practice, but of course they would have to pay for that.
I will keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers!

  22. So sorry to hear about Lulu. Bless her heart! Do they make doggie boots or shoes for stuff like that or will they not be able to go back to that area again? I bet her poor little paw is hurting pretty bad. :(

  27. Sweet girl. Adding my well wishes for "our" LuLu. Echoing so many of the above sentiments. Always a frustrating feeling when our little friends are hurting ~ but having you & Rich and her sweet big brother Wally to keep her company will no doubt speed that recovery time.

  28. such sad news, Leslie. :-( we live in a rural area, and sometimes people shoot their guns thinking they are far enough away from other people. There have been several accidents due to other people's ignorance. I hope Lulu is soon feeling better and that her wound does not become infected. Did you make a report? I hope so, so that if there are enough of them, law enforcement knows that there is a danger at that lake's beach. love, de
