Yellow House and Other Things

Here’s a little peek at one front corner of the finally finished yellow house.  I’m hard pressed to come up with a photo that doesn’t focus too much on the battered and bruised flower beds.  I would love to have a summer that for once doesn’t involve a home improvement project that wreaks havoc on the garden.

This is the back.  It’s our dog yard and utility area, but it’s also where we like to drink our morning coffee in the summertime.  Next year there will be flower-filled pots hanging outside those windows and sitting on the steps.  The brown lattice on the wall in the background will have baskets of flowers hanging on it as well.  I’m hoping I can talk Rich into painting the lattice white, but I hate to mention it at this point.

There’s a treat bush in the dog yard, growing on a stump by the back fence.  They’re salal berries, a native plant.  If you’re familiar with Saskatoon berries, you’ll have an idea of their flavor.  Saskatoons are plumper, easier to pick, a little more sophisticated.  Salal berries are quite good, but it’s almost impossible to pick them without squishing them.  Wally and LuLu simply strip them off the bush.  Funny, as much as they love treats, they don’t pay any attention to the treat bush until I point it out to them.

I cut back a hydrangea the other day.  It was overdue and most of its flowers were done, anyway.  It sits in the sun and blooms and finishes earlier than the others.  I filled a vase with the salvageable blooms and added a couple from another bush.  They are gorgeous, aren’t they?  I hardly ever cut a bouquet, but hydrangeas do last well as cut flowers.

There’s LuLu in the shade with a lace cap hydrangea beyond her.  There are still a few blooms on the butterfly bush.  The purple and blue are a cool and restful combination, certainly prettier when both bushes are in full bloom.

There’s not much to this photo, but I love how the sun dappled path draws you into the woods.

I’m glad you could come visit today.  Let’s enjoy summer while we can, okay?  See you again soon!

  3. The house and gardens look fabulous! I love the beautiful colors of the Hydrangeas. It does looks like a little bit of paradise and with Wally and Lulu there, I'm sure it is. I've never heard of those berries, but that's cute that the pups like them as a treat.

  5. I would love to come visit your garden and dream a way a few hours. Hydrangeas look wonderful! I'll have to pick a few off my bush to put in a vase. I didn't know that Salal berries were edible - go figure! I guess you learn something new everyday! Hope the dogs enjoyed them!

Alas... mine does not look like this however our beat down sun has a lot to do with that one. Glad the puppies are enjoying the berries and sunshine. ;-)

  7. The house is as beautiful as I knew it would be. That yellow just acts as the perfect backdrop for all your gorgeous flowers! After looking at your pictures, I have to say you live in a Garden of Eden. With puppies, instead of snakes! Your yard is more beautiful than most professional gardens I have been to! I doubt i would ever go inside if I lived there! You would find me outside just drinking in all the beauty & smiling! EAR to EAR!

  8. Gorgeous pictures Leslie of your yellow and white cottage look home. It was so fun seeing it IRL recently. Even battered your gardens are still so gorgeous :-)

Rich is as meticulous and talented with a paint brush as you are with your stamping. A great match and then.....you throw in your sweet doggies and wow..what a great combo :-) TFS

  9. ohhh, I feel that I have entered a lovely sanctuary, Leslie! How bright and sunny your home now is, and such happy colors abound! What are those gorgeous ferns in the 2nd photo (are they ferns?) they certain are beautiful! All your shrubbery is pretty. I understand about the "beating down" of the landscape when home renos. Here, my caladiums are already dying back and it's not September yet. It is too hot for hydrangeas here, so I covet those cut beauties! Truly amazing with their intense blues and purples. Do you add different minerals to different bushes to achieve the different colors? (did I use the word "different" enough? LOL) Lulu and Wally are a hoot. Don't they just delight in new toys when shown what to do with them? Your yard looks like a park. I do so love gardening, but it appears I'll need to be reveling in your photos rather than playing in my own yard these days. Thank you for sharing so private photos of your paradise! hugs, de

  17. Beautiful, you must just smile when you come home and see that yellow home welcoming you :) Your flowers are just lovely, I really would like to do some more planting around here but just keeping up with our garden vegetables and all the weeding and yard maintenance I haven't done that, I always have 3 pots hanging from the porch and one on a shepherds hook out front and then our tiger lilies and other flowering bushes but that's it. Glad you shared the house pictures it looks great!
