Butterflies on the Butterfly Bush

I photographed a couple of garden visitors the other day.  This velvety brown beauty is called a Mourning Cloak, or in Britain it’s known as a Camberwell Beauty.  It can live up to a year, so it seems surprising I don’t see more of them.

Below is the same butterfly in its angel wing pose.

This next one is called a Painted Lady.

So pretty!  Enjoy your day!

  2. Extraordinary photos! Thanks for sharing all of this loveliness. I tried to grow a Butterfly Bush here in Illinois but it never did well. I just love them.

  3. Beautiful pictures Leslie. I love when you share your photo's, there is so much beauty in your gardens. The butterflies are gorgeous, I love the painted lady, so rich in yellows. We lost 4 out of 5 butterfly bushes over the winter because it was so harsh this year, and we replaced 3 of them. They are small but growing fast since the spring, full of hundreds of blooms. Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful day!

  8. Lucky you, getting such beautiful butterflies on your butterfly bush! I have one too, but the critters that visit are not nearly so large or so pretty.

  12. Wow! They are so beautiful. I tried this year to attract butterflies with milkweed plants, but I never saw any caterpillars. Both my sis and one of my nieces are really into it with lots of plants and then they have a special container where they put the caterpillars so they can make their crysallis and become a butterfly. I think next year I'm going to be more prepared. The flowers are gorgeous too. No wonder the butterflies like to come visit you. ;)
